I've just finished reading Bob Gates' book on his period as defense secretary. Some of it is very fascinating stuff, particularly about his different experiences in the Bush and Obama administration. Some predictable, some not so much.

But on the point of cutting the defense budget in half, I'm on board. But it would require as large a change in our domestic politics to accomplish it as any chance of moving to the requirement for publicly funded national political campaigns. Most likely, not in our lifetimes. But well worth keeping on the "let's build a movement" front burner.
