I've seen poor people buy poor quality food with food stamps- chips and such- but I've never seen them buying steak. I figure those incidents are just lies, that angry, racist (often), folks use to excuse their viciousness toward the poor. Which is not to say that someone somewhere isn't now, or has not in the past, abused their food stamps- there is abuse, but a lot of food stamp users are using it the way it was intended- and they are using it to keep from being hungry- and I applaud that use.

Do I wish the poor (and the more affluent) ate better? Yes. Yes I do. I'd even be for some compassionate restrictions in terms of what the poor buy- in order to force them to eat better- but I'm afraid any move in that direction would become a pork project for the various farm lobbies- and the poor would just be eating low quality surplus crap without regard to health.
