The kids pay a deposit upfront when they pick up their MacBooks before the school year begins. They don't have them over summer vacation. The deposit is not very large, but apparently it covers a lot of expenses that come up with the program, including a fund for kids whose parents just cannot afford the deposit. Seems to me, a very smart initiative for Apple. Her parents have traditionally been Windows machine users, and they still are, but they definitely like the MacBooks.
