I have data.

I'm not arguing you don't. But, as you might guess, your data is anecdotal. Not a bad thing and one that guides your view of things but not based on a well done study of such.

I'm not arguing such studies are not out there; just that I haven't seen them. And that I'm particularly suspicious of the arguments that students who do worse today are because mother is no longer in the home. I'll change my mind if the studies indicate such.

You may be aware that my discipline, sociology, witnessed a huge debate over the effects of parental influence on student achievement in the late 60s and through much of the 70s. It was initiated by The Coleman Report. You can see a brief bit about it in this short wikipedia entry on James Coleman, the sociologist involved. en.wikipedia.org.

If you know about some serious national studies that address this issue--changes in family structure and how they effect student achievement--please let me know. I'll be happy to take a look.
