Geez, I thought 8.1 was supposed to be better.

I should have known better.

MSFT is a prime example of why monopolies are terrible.

It is Gates' and Balmer's and Harvard's fault. Harvard instills this suave "We know best" patina in its students (even in its dropouts, or maybe especially in its dropouts, at least some of them), they get socialized into it, and it turns them into ... I'm not sure what the word is. But they get this snobbish veneer and it contaminates much of what they touch and who they hang out with, the rest of world becomes peons (except for an elite few who they admit into their sanctum). And then they do crappy things like Microsoft has been doing for awhile now, but of course it isn't crappy to them, it is that the world just can't see how wonderful it is, or maybe can't see all the constraints that they have worked under, blah blah blah in any case it isn't their fault. If there is a fault.
