I'm doing support work now, and most of my work comes from people who had their computer go bluey, or just thought it was time to get a new computer, and got a Win 8 machine. Most had been through several version of Windows, and expected 8 and 8.1 to be just an evolution of Windows 7, which is what it should have been. So, they bought one, expecting no big shock.
Then, they get the thing home or to the office and try to DO something on it, that they had no trouble doing previously, and are shocked to realize they have NO IDEA how to operate this computer! It's that different.
One example I can give you is that 8 has a "Start" screen, that displays tiles that launch apps. If you launch Internet Explorer from that screen, it has no visible controls other than a forward and back button, and the address bar is at the BOTTOM of the screen. If you launch Internet Explorer from the "Desktop" screen, which looks like the old Windows desktop, it more closely resembles and works like the "old" Internet Explorer, with the address bar at the TOP of the screen! Name another OS that has an app that looks and acts different depending on where it's launched from..
Particularly with business users or people who have to use their computer for work, it's just maddening. Big business users aren't buying it. They're hanging on to what they've got, and hoping they don't go bluey. |
