The real danger here, for the US, is in the potential for Obama to over react and do something stupid in an effort not to look weak. He simply doesn't know what he's doing and has pretty much screwed up EVERY foreign policy crisis he has encountered. He is not an experienced, knowledgeable individual like Bush, Clinton, Bush 41 or Reagan. He could totally fuck up and start something he can't finish or something that spins out of control.

Putin, of course, knows he's dealing with an idiot and will measure his moves accordingly, and recognizes the possibility of such a miscalculation on Obama's part, particularly, given his weak foreign policy team. Putin will be prepared to capitalize on it and I suspect, any action Obama takes will have been previously planned for by Putin.

There is no return to the status quo; the best we can hope for now is that it doesn't create long term problems for the relationship (post-Obama).
