I divide American interests into two sectors, principled interests and economic interests. Policy is impacted by each set of interests and over the past one hundred years these interests have resulted in growth, at least for part of that period. Gardeners know that if you prepare the soil to support grass or a farm product then grass or an agricultural product will thrive and choke out weeds. If, however, you don’t maintain the soil, then over time weeds will take over as the soil becomes less conducive to more productive plants.
