Of course, the oil has helped. Hard to argue against that.

I was thinking about my post and decided I had not made the argument I was trying to. ........There is very little doubt that the social programs in Norway are generous. They do take care of their people and they have just bunches of money to do that with, but my point to the Krugman piece was that there is a huge difference in the culture of the social safety nets between Norway and the US. Krugman would adore the business culture that puts jobs above profits - but that is just not us. I would like that too as most here I imagine, but there isn't a chance in hell that business culture will ever be adopted in America. The other point I tried to make is that while Norway has generous benefits - they are of a different kind. They have a different feel to them. The culture is just way different. With a retirement age of 67 and with the strings attached to unemployment - that is limited - they haven't abused their wealth with lavish giveaways. They not only pay for their programs they put huge amounts of money into savings.
