Orange CEO: Netflix Plans to Start Service in France in Autumn
By Inti Landauro

PARIS--Streaming-video juggernaut Netflix (NFLX) has contacted telecom operators in France ahead of the launching of its service in there in the autumn, Stephane Richard, the chief executive of French telecom company Orange SA (ORA.FR), said Friday.

Netflix has started talks with the French government over the past few months to expand into the French market, whose size makes it attractive for the U.S.-based online video service.

"We don't now yet what is the model they want to apply," Mr. Richard said in an interview with Radio Classique on Friday. He added he can't say whether Orange will collaborate with Netflix since it is unclear whether the company will deliver the streaming to customers through the operators' set-top boxes or not, like in the U.S.

He said the U.S. company hasn't settled whether it will operate from France or from abroad, which would allow it to pay lower taxes and dodge restrictive regulations on quotas of content made in the country.
