Many things are not what they seem to be.
When the US was protecting Canada it was actually protecting itself. The US should be thankful that Canada is a friendly country and its vast landmass affords the US a formidable buffer state and Canada is a resource-rich country, too.
The US does not have to arrogate to itself the dubious role of policeman of the world. That it does so is not because it is a noble, heroic or altruistic, but rather the US has self-serving and ulterior motives. (see book reference below).
Kissinger once said to the effect that THE NATION THAT CONTROLS THE WORLD'S FUEL (OIL) AND OTHER VITAL RESOURCES CONTROLS THE WORLD. That is, by controlling the world's vital resources, the US will achieve global dominance and maintain it.
To this end, the US has been creating one excuse after another (or one bogeyman after another) and invoke its bullshitty RIGHT TO PROTECT principle to provide cover for parking itself in resource-rich areas of the world.
