It has always been possible to achieve extremely small
geometries using e-beams (that's what they use to make
photomasks), but e-beams have to write every feature
serially, the entire quarter mile of wire for every
layer, and it takes a long time. Like Lucent, IBM has
been experimenting with e-beam, but it's still not ready
for interesting volumes as far as I know. It's lab gear.
