That's an excellent question. It should have a good long-term effect on ORCL, but it's probably short-term meaningless. MSFT competes with ORCL in ORCL's market, but it's not a monopolistic threat. Now, if NT 5.0 were going to be shipped with a built-in SQL server, that would have been another story, because the analogy would be obvious.

It's long-term good for ORCL because it makes it less likely that MSFT will attempt a stunt like building database products into the OS.
