There is one other possible explanation for this. One that put a software company I worked for out of business.

They had dynamite programmers, a CTO from Oracle with 2 doctorates, a CEO who had managed a 5 billion dollar fund. Their software alerted the big trading houses to attempts to manipulate stocks via bogus information. They had a magnificent Sun/Oracle data center. They spent 2 years developing their system.

When they released their system all the information was in the form of numerical statistics. There was no way for traders to see any relationship between older information or statistical norms and anomalies. The solution of course was to supply graphical interface that would make anomalies instantly obvious.

By the time they realized they'd blown it, they were out of business.

Not saying this is the case. Just offering another hypothesis. What good is an alarm system if the warning is incomprehensible?
