My question remains though, why should the US lead a military effort to confront Putin

Isn't this primarily an issue that needs to be dealt with by those near the Bear

I have no doubt that the US will support NATO in whatever action they take

..but we have neither the will nor the resources to undertake another action with at best tangential negative consequences for the US at this time
