Georgia was not in our interest, obviously but Ukraine is only 47 million people and it would be much cheaper to stop the Russians now then later after they take over Ukraine then the Baltic states then Poland and Azerbaijan and choke Europe we will need to face them at the end.

Of course EU and UK must lead the effort and not US but only the US has the military power to intimidate the Russians.
