There is a book called "Nothingness" by Henning Genz. A German theoretical physicist. It is about vacuums and particle physics. I have been reading it for a decade. It is so complicated.

From what I gather he thinks the reason the universe is expanding and not contracting is vacuum energy. All vacuums have energy and as the universe expands the vacuum energy expands. And vacuum energy pushes I think, not pulls.

So as the universe gets larger the expansion speed increases as the size of the vacuum increases.

When virtual particles are pulled through an energy field they become real.

On math, as you know, many feel it is sort of a real thing unto itself, sort of like Plato's forms.

A mystery of the universe we discovered. A key to unlock its secrets.

My son in law has a PHD in atmospheric chemistry and is a research scientist and teaches physics at a northwestern university. He says the same thing you do. I am an applied physicist.
