Russia...Crimea, US Sanctions and oil companies.

Who wins in the end and who loses?

Russia is the big loser....If they retaliate against western sanctions by with holding NG sales to Europe, this will reinforce the idea that they are an unreliable supplier. Europe will do everything possible to find other suppliers of gas and oil.Peak demand is winter and this works against Russia. They currently supply about 30% of Europe's NG.

Sanctions should be applied gradually and in increasing metrics. Bleed em to death. Already every Russian is about 12% poorer than they were last month. That's how much the Ruble fell against the dollar and other currencies.

The winners....Oil Companies and off shore drillers. If Russia proves just a little hesitant about delivering oil and gas to Europe....a huge investment in new drilling activity will follow. Oil flowing to Europe is the economic life line of Russia.

I own stocks in some oil companies (ESV, RIG, CHK, and NOG). the dividends alone make them long term holds.
