My husband and I attended a dinner/speech at the Lancaster County Convention Center tonight at which the featured speaker was Dr. Ben Carson. We also invited five friends to come along, one of whom was unfamiliar with Dr. Carson. That friends left tonight’s event in utter admiration of the venerable doctor. (The rest of us simply had our exalted opinion of him verified.)

The place was sold out (weeks ago) and I would estimate that there were between 2,500 and 3,000 in attendance.

Dr. Carson was electrifying in his description of his own background -- rising from abject poverty to the respected position he holds today, and serving as the head of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins and being the recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom (among countless other honors) in between.

He was unabashed in his relentless criticism of the purposeful and ongoing destruction of the American education system, and the government’s ruthless encouragement of the entitlement mentality, in conjunction with the enormous increase in the power of government over the individual.

He received several standing ovations, with many other major interruptions for applause, and his most well-received comment was, ‘You never accomplish anything by making excuses, with one notable exception ... who now resides in the White House.’

I believe I could vote for this man for national office. He exemplifies everything that is desperately needed in Washington at this watershed point in our history: He is a Washington outsider, untarnished by special interests, or favors owed or outstanding. He is a man who wrote his own ticket to success, and conquered countless personal obstacles while doing so. He has a deep and reverent knowledge of America’s founding principles and history. He is insightful, intelligent, visionary, honest, exceedingly humble, and yet courageous enough to take on the politically-correct army that seeks to demonize him at every turn.

God bless Dr. Carson, wherever the future leads him. America will be blessed if that future includes a position of leadership in Washington. We desperately need principled men who are willing to look corruption and deception in the eye and challenge their right to exist.
