Church influence when young, then long interest in the literature of economic development.

Earlier I suggested you read American Evita. Can I bore you with a short anecdote about that?

One of my favorite guys was a Dago, born six days into the twentieth century, came here in 1920. He wasn't super literate, but knew how to work. He eventually built a side sewer business and did well enough that he was able to finance homes for several paisans, offering loans a bit better than banks.

About concurrently with his emigration two of his brothers lit out for Argentina, then a paradise in the making. In the late 80's two of My Man's grandchildren went to visit that branch of the family. The Argentine brothers were of the same stock and ethos, but they and their families hadn't done so well, were astonished their Yankee cousins could afford that trip.

Now you join many others enthusiastically embracing a dirtbag whose prescriptions are largely aligned with what was done in Argentina, and other places. I'd guess you join a bundle of reasonably intelligent people alive at the collapse of the Soviet Union who've never been exposed to gimlet-eyed examination of what went wrong there.

The flowery rhetoric of those who want to exercise dominion over their betters always delivers the opposite. Too few here have been given the tools to understand why that is so. Instead, quite the opposite.
