Guns are designed to kill. There should be no doubt about that. Of course there are exceptions where a particular design may have just been created for show or target practice or something but the bottom line of guns is a tool of deadly force, or at least an overwhelming argument. In the wrong hands, a tool that can be used in the commission of horrific acts. If this world was a place where personal protection were an unnecessary concern, we could certainly do with out the use of force. But that isn't the case because... because that is the nature of this world.

Self-determination is the expression of the fundamental right of human beings to engage personal power as an essential feature of their own autonomy. The right to act with regard to the well-being of self and others and of self-defense from coercion in all its forms, including the right to protect self, others, and property from harm is simply a natural and universal human condition. Personal security may be the most crucial concern in one's agency in life.
