Actually the simplest form of life that could exist had and has to be pretty complex just to exist and reproduce. An appeal to imaginary simplicity fails.

Life today is pretty complex. It used to be simpler. Earlier than that it was simpler still.

More hand waving:

Somewhere, perhaps near an undersea geothermal vent, there would have been energy and a chemical mix and some some chemicals would have come together to form a molecule that attracts the swirling chemicals to come together in the same pattern as the original molecule.

If this were possible, we'd be able to find examples of it happening now. We could even set up the conditions in a lab and sit back and watch it happen all by itself.
