has to be pretty complex just to exist and reproduce.

There are many very simple reproducing compounds that form spontaneously. Clay compounds will form crystalline surfaces, and these can act as a catalyst for arranging other chemicals on the surface. This has the effect of building concentrations of more complex molecules.

In our current environment, any amino acids or proteins that formed this way would quickly become food for some bacteria. Before there were any bacteria these compounds would accumulate and interact with compounds from other catalyst surfaces. Given this soup that no other organism is eating and a few million years and you get some interesting reproduction.
