Darwin
's challenge was not just that there were different animals on different continents. The real problem is that groups of fossils from different continents of the same age showed the same population. It wasn't just a few similar animals, it was the whole ecosystem as expressed by these fossils was the same. He never figured out exactly why himself, but he correctly predicted that scientists in his future would reveal how plants and animals could commingle in the past in ways they couldn't in the present.
