Let's also hope they don't fall into the trap of giving it away in order to win database or application business......

I strongly suggested several months ago that Oracle would need to focus on components and applications because of the rather obvious impact that will have in a distributed environment. Microsoft can dominate the components, tools and applications markets as well as the small to medium networks. It's equally obvious that this domination buys them an endless supply of time and money with which to assault the large-systems developers. ORCL has been shifting its focus to components, tools and applications just as growth in other areas has been slowing. Hopefully you have had time to consider what the impact of Microsoft components and tools might have when the time comes to unplug ORCL and plug in MSFT at the back-end.

Now, the reason I bring that up is that I think you are missing another important attribute of successful software, one that is even more obvious that the need for "knowledgable" components: ubiquity Ask Microsoft about that trap and while you're at it ask IBM why they are falling into that trap with eSuite by giving it away for $49. The real trap is in trying to skim profits from your most loyal customers. Ask Apple about that tactic.
