Politics is the struggle for power--alpha wolf-alpha tribe.

Ideology (especially religious ideology) is the greatest political weapon. Fear and Ignorance.

And the church sought to keep people ignorant and in fear for centuries-because their entire political power rested on people remaining ignorant, afraid...or DEAD.

Those who were neither ignorant nor afraid were simply murdered (ritualistically, of course!) as enemies of the church. And the Church was right and Martin Luther was right...REASON is the enemy of the Church! The greatest Protestant Christian knew exactly where the power of the church resided (IGNORANCE) and who the enemy was (REASON).
