Your example is just the tip of the iceberg. This 2012 WSJ article outlines how companies like Orbitz wisely use the knowledge that a visitor is an Apple user to craft the offerings presented to them. It goes far beyond what is detailed in that piece. Not only can a merchant present Apple users with more expensive products (or show fewer "deals") and improve cart size, but we've found that you can make better guesses at cultural, sexual, and other social preferences, too.

A couple years ago and earlier, it boiled down to developer efforts being best spent on iOS apps if your goal was to maximize profits. We've seen that shift dramatically since then, largely for reasons this article details. In fact, with our projects, we've now seen the the profit potential completely reverse, with Android now in the lead and the shift actually accelerating.
