I will say there is a lot of confusion on this stuff. I forwarded your article on to a collegue (Washington Post and I got this reply)

Here is what Al Gore actually said: “...scientists reported with unprecedented alarm that the north polar ice cap is, in their words, ‘falling off a cliff.’ One study estimated that it could be completely gone during summer in less than 22 years. Another new study to be presented by US Navy researchers later this week warns that it could happen in as little as seven years—seven years from now.” Watch that 2007 Nobel acceptance speech and see for yourself what Al Gore said: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iVttichSzFk

Gore reported on an upcoming scientific study that said that the arctic could be ice free in the summer in as little as seven years. He did not say it would be. And he was reporting the conclusion of a group of scientists. He was not giving the results of his own judgement or analysis.

But what if Al Gore had been foolish enough to predict summer sea ice extent seven years into the future? Would that have been crazy? Perhaps, but he would not have been wrong to warn that the summer ice could be gone within years—not decades or centuries. Look at the following graph and the trendline is clear: the sea ice is disappearing. http://psc.apl.washington.edu/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/schweiger/ice_volume/BPIOMASIceVolumeAprSepCurrent.png The trendlines on the graph for summer sea ice volume intersects zero within the next decade or two.
