LG Semicon Develops Innovative DSP Chip
December 12, 1997 (SEOUL) -- LG Semicon Inc. is the
first Korean company to develop a third-generation digital
signal processor (DSP), a company official said.
Digital signal processors are analog-to-digital microchips that handle
voice and image signals at high speeds, and they are used widely in
mobile phones.
LG Semicon's new chip features high-speed data transfer, at almost
twice the speed of so-called second-generation DSPs, and it is just half
the size of conventional chips.
It consumes about 10 percent less power than the same-class DSPs
developed by leading U.S. microchip makers, the company spokesman
said.
This paves the way for LG to secure necessary technology for
developing other advanced chips, including a merged chip, which unifies
the functions of a RISC microprocessor and peripheral circuits, the
company spokesman said.
LG Semicon is cooperating with LG Information & Communications
Ltd. to promote sales of mobile phones and digital videodisk (DVD)
players equipped with the DSP chip.
The global DSP market, led by Texas Instruments Inc., Lucent
Technologies Inc. and Motorola Inc., is expected to grow by 40
percent a year, to reach US$29 billion by 2001, the company said.
