Yes, China has some issues to settle with Russia. In the short term, China can exploit any Russian weakness to get better terms for resources like energy, metals, and timber. In the longer term, how do you say Lebensraum in Chinese? ;)

Furthermore, China is extremely sensitive about what it regards as "internal matters". Putin based his Crimea annexation on a vote by the Crimean people, which is a highly dangerous precedent for China with regard to its sovereignty over Tibet and Xinjiang.

P.S. Many years ago I was amazed to learn about about all the peoples of Russia from National Geographic magazine. I do not recall this being mentioned in my grade school or high school education.
