The yahoo/finance search field is not finance specific and yields all sorts of output, including quote. For example when I type in "MN" in yahoo/finance, my first hit are links to the state of Minnesota, Minnesota football teams etc.

That's not true for me. :) What page are you using?
On finance.yahoo.com I just typed in "MN" and it auto completes as a ticker. It also has two buttons "Search Finance" and "Search Web".
