I don't think you realized that the paper was illustrating that the errors found in DNA are not random. The process may have started out with random errors, but most of those wouldn't even result in a fertilized egg. The errors that are left have been selected. Remember, evolution is not a random walk through gene changes, it is a selection process in which the vast majority of random changes are not found in the resulting generations.
