No the Greek & Roman rationalist philosophers that began to appear in the 5th century who began to question the gods, myths & origin stories. You know , there were the great ones like stoic Marcus Aurelius that maintained the integrity of the organized state so all these hero/messiah afterlife mystery cults would have an empire to spread itself & flourish in to begin with. (kind of important, wouldn't you say?)
Look at early proto Christianity, what they were arguing about (nonsensical), there's always going to be secret societies with far flung esoteric supernatural mythologies & secret mysteries, these were already well known going back to ancient Greece. Always going to be arm chair believers that delight joining in these arcane societies & speculations, its still the aolescence of our race, even now, look at you!
