Apparently, what you miss is that China and the USA are two different places. With two different landscapes, vastly different population densities, and totally different mindsets about transportation. There are segments of the US landscape that are very suitable for hi speed rail . Trust. The freedom to get in your car and go where you want to when you want to is one of the few remaining absolute freedoms we have. Most of us aren't willing to give that up. Yes, I understand its a God given right and was added as an addendum to the Ten Commandments.........thou shall drive whenever possible.
