Before GPS location technology, avionics primarily depended on AHRS, which stands for Attitude and Heading Reference System. The term itself can be a little confusing because heading is also a component of the "attitude" of an airplane. These systems measure the roll, pitch and heading.

When accelerometers were added to the system, one result was an Inertial Navigation Unit, and these could only estimate the change in position and orientation. This normally meant that the unit had to be given an initial position (latitude, longitude and elevation) and an initial orientation when the airplane was sitting on a taxiway.

For over twenty years people have been integrating GPS with these high-end INU systems, and more recently using low-cost MEMS sensors. Even without GPS one can still integrate sensor data into an AHRS. There are many companies currently developing ARHS units using MEMS. Here is a 37 second clip of InvenSense's effort. This is probably from one of their development kits.
