There are several affordable improvements in luggable media which are very close to commercial release. Unlike magnetic surfaces these new technologies have a virtually unlimited storage life -- important for legal documents, medical records, et cetera -- and they hold far more than Zippies -- in excess of 10 GB which amounts to 100 fold increase. IOMG Zip drives have that "right here, right now" quality which makes the zippy the only practical alternative to the floppy but even there they aren't without competition. The existence of very cheap and very fat hard-drives combined with high bandwith connectivity is luggable media's main competition -- why lug when you can transmit? Maybe I'm too cautious but I don't like the future of Iomega's products; there is certainly room for optimism in the next few quarters. I could be persuaded otherwise but right now my pessimism seems justified.
