The ER doc put the XRay on the lightbox and said, "Her lungs are a mess. I can't help her." I said, "She has no heat." He said, "That isn't a factor. If you can get some other doctor to admit her, fine, but I can't do it." Unfortunately, it took the better part of a day to get in touch with another doctor because doctors' offices were closed due to the storm and phone lines were down. Once admitted, she was treated as any normal patient would have been, with great care and dignity. But those hours in the ER arguing over her admission left me with a bitter taste.
And you think we have the best healthcare system in the world????

I don't know enough about medicine to know one way or the other but I can imagine that a physician judged that outpatient dialysis would be adequate.
According to the daughter, they didn't or wouldn't give him dialysis even though it was the day he was supposed to get it at his normal nearby facility. I had a friend who had it done regularly......if they don't dialyzed on a regular basis, their bp rises, and they balloon up due to retention of fluids.... That ER physician, I think, could have sent him to the dialysis center which was a short ride away...but the old guy reportedly insisted on going to the EF because he said he had a stomach virus he placed higher priority on than dialysis.....but that hospital certainly had dialysis machines... So I repeat the physician (s) in that EF were assholes..... But it remains very strange that that story was picked up by no one except the American Spectator.....
