And now for something completely different:

The misty world of marijuana stocks

Experts such as Alan Brochstein, a financial adviser who was an early adopter of marijuana portfolios, are also sought after by those looking for a foray into the foliage.

"I spent six months being negative - I saw a lot of shady business practices," says Mr Brochstein. "But there are newer and better companies now."

There are better investors too - most of Mr Brochstein's clients are "people who appreciate the long-term growth story, and don't partake in the herb", he insists.

I can definitely see that a lot of investors would shy away from this industry initially which is a plus, since eventually if recreational is legalized marijuana would become no different than the booze industry. Those who are not irrational about a legitimate industry would benefit from being first to invest in an industry that will inevitably produce enough money to draw in greedy investors later.

For reference

The global alcoholic beverage market is expected to witness moderate growth and reach an estimated $1,369.5 billion by 2018. Increasing demand of alcoholic beverages in emerging countries because of their huge population base and growing consumption of alcohol by the young generation as well as rising disposable income supports the industry growth

For the record I'm a non-user, former user. I see it as not a problem for our society. After all about half the innovators in Silicone Valley were hippies.

High quality marijuana is very similar to high quality wine. There are many interesting flavors. Some is very potent like distilled spirits. In fact I can see growers developing weaker varieties with sweeter tastes. Buds are after all flowers, and very fragrant flowers. I used to smoke one puff a day after work at night and sometimes that was too strong for me. It would be nice, I think, to have milder forms that one might savor over longer periods of time. Not everyone wants to get wasted. Some smart cookie is going to figure that one out.

Did someone say cookie? I'm hungry...

One large difference is, you can easily grow it in your backyard. Much easier and less expensive than brewing beer (which I've also done) or wine. I've known growers and they work hard. In Mendocino and Humboldt Counties October/November are boom times for retailers as growers put their cash into tools and vehicles.
