Alexander the Great was upset his teacher Aristotle was planning to write his philosophy as he believed his father paid for that philosophy in the hiring and patronage of Aristotle and more or less owned it.

Aristotle reassured young Alexander penning his philosophy was simply a testament or encomium to himself so his thoughts would be known throughout the centuries. He also indicated what he taught and what he wrote were not the same and it would be impossible to convey his philosophy through book form alone.

So you see young Koan education like we see it today is akin to believing we get nutrition at McDonald's instead of a home cooked meal. There are rare exceptions of course...
