Koan,
FDR created millions of jobs for people. Social security pulled millions more of old people and especially women out of poverty.
The only thing that pulls people out of poverty is a strong, functioning economy.

SS and the New Deal only provided a safety net for millions of Americans. They were still living in poverty.

I wouldn't go as far as i-node did and call the New Deal a "disaster," but the two of you are on extreme ends of its portrayal.
