The motivations matter. Putin is not like Hitler was. "Anschluss" was done in Hong Kong too, when Britain ceded sovereignty of land along with with the leased land. That worked out well. Not that everyone would have wanted to be handed over to China but Hong Kong before anschluss was similar to the geopolitical position of Crimea. Anschluss is not necessarily a bad thing. If NZ was re-anschlussed by Oz it wouldn't worry me. Come to think of it, I'd like it.

Adolf was a totalitarian megalomaniac with a murderous mindset. Putin is steadying a situation without a shot being fired, with luck and provided dopey Joe Biden doesn't cause carnage in Kiev. Victoria Nuland tried to cause a big problem but Putin did an NSA on her and disclosed her evil-doing plans, then moved to neutralize them, perfectly reasonably.

Making comparisons of Putin and Russia with Adolf and Germany is absurd.

I'm a refugee in the same way that Palestinians are refugees. A grandmother was a refugee from the Franco Prussian war whereby Alsace was anschlussed, then later re-anschlussed back again in a subsequent war, then reanschlussed yet again, only to be once more re-anschlussed. I should claim right of return. Crimea is just being anschlussed again. It's best to not get into a big war over it. it seems that parts of eastern Ukraine think along the same lines as the Crimeans. "Prussia" seems very like "Russia". Google could probably tell me why the names are nearly the same. Maybe Putin thinks Alsace should be part of Russia?

Crimea goes back thousands of years, with various tribal marauders taking over at various times. Most recently, Russia has been in possession for a couple of hundred years, murdering their way [Stalin and co] to numerical superiority over others. That's what happened everywhere on Earth and still happens here and there.

Obama should spend more time worrying about climate change than Crimea and eastern Ukraine. He could cut CO2 emissions by telling Biden to stay home. There would be less hot air full of CO2 from Biden and his airliner/fleet of cars.

Obama/Biden should spend more time on the dispute about ranching on public land and Obamacare and leave Russia to the Russians.
