".... I think it worked better when they were announcing new iPhones at wwdc."

Apple needs to plan for multiple launch dates for the iPhone. Two might be enough but, limiting to one date is a mistake. I'd like one form factor to roll out in Asia in spring/early summer and another to roll out in the fall in the US/west. Beginning in the fall of 2012 and continuing last fall, Apple began experiencing supply shortages that artificially constrained sales, at least temporarily.

The takeaway from those experiences is that Apple has never been able to supply enough phones in launch quarters after they reached a 35-40 million phone/quarter rate. Now, to grow in their most important quarter, they have to supply over 51.25 million phones. It is an enormous logistical challenge that Apple hasn't met.

So, it is time imv to spread out smartphone product launches by form factor/geographic region favorite. Larger new phones in China/east in the spring and more traditional new phones in the US/west in the fall. It doesnt mean the different form factors would be exclusive to region. It would spread out the logistical hump and it woukd create two major smartphone events around the world for Apple.
