The simple analysis:

They (Putin et al) are going back to the tactics that "built" their country (at least its land mass), which seem popular amongst at least some.

If it works why stop, and stop where?

Only unless they run up against something stronger.

Which, historically, can cost, significantly, in lives and treasure.

Clearly, they cannot go in the direction of China, which leaves smaller bite size chunks of countries with embedded excuses for acquisition, population or history or both.

Acquisition on the cheap, unless someone seriously resists.

Hard now to see a reduction in defense spending, or a return to business as usual.

The lessons of pre WW2 and 1 should rattle some nerves in Eastern Europe, and Germany, if they are smart.
