Interesting stuff, but I am trending in a different direction, Nigel. I don't think I could deal with response and battery life you are experiencing. I just got a Sony RX10 as a step toward "down weighting" my equipment, particularly for travel. I won't be able to use it for wildlife, but I am hoping it will be more than adequate for people, scenery and general subjects. I used my RX100 for about 60% of the images I made during trips to Ethiopia and West Africa, but needed more reach to complement it. By contrast I've seldom used my vaunted Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 Art lens on my 7D since getting it last summer. It is now for sale along with some others. I'm keeping the 7D and several lenses for sports and wildlife. John
