I recall reading something a couple of months ago about one of the Google top people who was riding in the back of a car and he heard or watched the Apple SJ announcement of the details of the first iPhone, and he was shocked at how advanced it was, and immediately he had their release of Android halted and overhauled to use a touch interface, because he realized the old style mechanical button smartphones would quickly become obsolete.

There have been several articles that were along these lines.

Which basically says that while Schmidt knew that Apple was working on an iPhone, he either knew absolutely nothing about the design or he actually did keep the design from the Android team.
