Perhaps the answer will come in the form of more "agile" rotary steerable tools and/or coiled drill pipe and casing advances -- perhaps a marriage of high-spec alloys with carbon fiber to address both strength and flexibility issues. I know that there is a lot of research going on in these areas (as well as continuously functional rotating IBOPs -- a sort of mythic hunt). As you know, mud motors and whip stocks require high degrees of expertise, artistry and luck to even come close to shallower applications than the more precise (but much deeper application) rotary steerable tools. I have no clue as to how close anyone is to coming up with the right combo of tech and technique (the sort of combo that unlocked the deeper shales).
