By the median stock I simply mean the stock you get if you rank all the stocks entered into the competition (irrespective of how many times they were picked) by their return to date, and pick the one in the middle of the ranking. So that tells you how the "average" stock in the competition is doing.

The median stock is a good one to compare to - it avoids the problems of the outliers (whether up or down) driving the averages.
