And let's not forget that it didn't take Schmidt's inside information to reverse engineer the iPhone UI-- Palm announced the Pre months after the first Android phone came out (2 years after the iPhone announcment), and IMO, it did a much better job ripping off the iPhone's idiosyncrasies. It had the overscroll bounceback, pinch-to-zoom, universal search-- all features that Android specifically kept out of early versions out of deference to Apple's patent pile.

Jobs said the iPhone had 5 year head start, but it really only had a 2 year head start.
