<Pssst, it is a 90 degree curve, unless you are using a slant rig.>

Haste makes waste. Time to chuckle at myself.

<a radius that results in smooth, manageable doglegs is easily attainable at a rate of 5 degrees per 30m (100 feet). These days, medium radius wells can achieve 20 degrees per 30m and short radius wells can achieve an unbelievable 90 degrees per 30m>.

So, we don't really need coiled drill pipe. Excellent! Thank you a second time. Much appreciated.

<Good luck getting production casing/liner around that bend though! I think that is more designed for competent formations and open hole completions.>

This is the other issue I was trying to get at.

Some Marcellus drilling locations have encountered a more "friable" shale and the there's been serious problems with caving into the uncased bore hole. While drilling the 2nd or 3rd leg of the Consol/Noble JV Marcellus well (Normantown, WV) the multi-million $$ SLB MWD tool assembly got stuck in the lateral due to caving and they had a heckova time getting it out. Further laterals were cancelled.

Have seen that many old vertical shallow wells sand up and need to be pumped out once in awhile. Isn't it fair to expect considerable loose sand accumulation, over time, in a long open hole lateral?

Casing the gentle curve and then the full reach of each lateral reach would eliminate that problem and why I expressed the hope that some kind of coiled casing would be developed. Do you know any reason why that can't be done?

TIA
