I returned from a business trip to India a few hours ago. My visit duration was 9 days, which was sufficient enough to get a feel for the elections. I did not see many political ads by candidates or political parties or PACs ( not sure if they exist in India like they do here in US. Instead there were frequent ads to go out and exercise the right to vote. TV news were reporting that more than 75% of the registered voters were turning out to vote. Really impressive considering the level of illiteracy.

Regarding the prospects of winning, it depends on who you ask. I met a interesting taxi driver who said that bringing Rajiv Gandhi to power would mean the continuation of corruption where if you did not have bribe money, you couldn't get what you want. But he also said that bringing Modi to power would unleash communal riots where his police would turn the other way during the riots and people would lose their lives just because of their religious faith. So under Modi you maybe denied your right to live, but under Gandhi you would have your right to life but may not get your wy on how you live. I thought that was an interesting POV.
